Spare Rib relaunches

April 30th, 2013 · 8:54 am  →  sPeaks

Breasts for the right purpose! (and other things Spare Rib might champion….)

One story really struck me this week – the attempts by Charlotte Rampling to relaunch the influential 70s feminist magazine Spare Rib. This raises some really interesting questions around what constitutes feminism today. Do we need a publication dedicated to it? What kind of content should it have? From my point of view, anything which puts women’s rights front and centre is a worthwhile cause, whether it helps tackle equal management pay in the UK or genital mutilation in Africa. If I had the money I would put forward some to the cause!

University of Westminster works on Peaks of London!

March 21st, 2013 · 8:06 am  →  sPeaks

I am rather excited, as I sit in my hotel room in Tokyo, that I shall tonight be judging the Fashion Marketing Degree students from the University of Westminster on their project on Peaks of London. Having briefed these students myself, I think they’re a very bright and international bunch. I’m sure I will learn a load. And I’m sure it will be fun. Good luck all!

Breast pads get their moment in the limelight.

February 25th, 2013 · 12:04 pm  →  sPeaks

Who says something as mundane and unsexy as breast pads – after all, they’re there to soak up excess milk seeping out of you – could be, well, extraordinary and maybe even a bit sexy?

In our ongoing ‘WHY COMPROMISE?’ mission statement at Peaks of London we’re always looking to make sure every little element of our lives with baby on the breast feel less like a compromise on your style. So check out these silky little fellas and pop them on your Mother’s Day list ASAP. Don’t take our word for it – see what Baby&Me has to say this month. Peaks x

Facebook disapproves of breastfeeding

December 22nd, 2012 · 3:36 am  →  sPeaks

Where exactly do we find ourselves as a culture when a breastfeeding label (Peaks of London) finds its Facebook ad disapproved because it alludes to someone breastfeeding? It’s a scary place, where accusations usually levelled at sexual titillation are suddenly able to be used against a woman using her breasts for the RIGHT reason – to feed a baby. As it happens, our ad doesn’t actually show any glimpse of a breast. But even if it did, how can that possibly be considered obscene? Now I find that attitude that Facebook are engendering completely obscene….

Kate gives her public what they want!

December 4th, 2012 · 10:16 am  →  sPeaks

Poor old Princess Kate – she spends ages fending off hacks with X ray specs trained at her ovaries, only to find when she does actually get up the duff she’s sick as a dog and must take to her bed. Whilst I was pretty lucky with both my pregnancies, I have a good friend in the ninth month of her third pregnancy who is on daily anti-sickness tablets and routinely fainted on the Tube. Like a nine month hangover. Ugh.

On a brighter note, we at Peaks have designed a dress called the Audrey with a certain Princess in mind. Here’s our ‘artist’s impression!’ If you’d like to pre-order the Audrey (it lands February to eleven countries) just e mail us at info@peaksoflondon.com

The dance of life

November 13th, 2012 · 4:15 am  →  sPeaks

In this month’s Baby&Me magazine I talk about the lexicon around motherhood – from Yummy Mummy to  MILF to ‘Wanting it all’, there’s a real bunch of passive/aggressive, parasexual terminology going on here which has to stop. Have a read on my take – with thanks to Carrie the founder of Mumsnet who coined the term ‘choreographers’ for mothers, and let me know what you think.

The In-Laws panic: Breastfeeding At Christmas Survey Results

November 5th, 2012 · 9:54 am  →  sPeaks

At Peaks of London we call the surge of sales of our breastfeeding dresses in December the ‘Uncle Rush’; as women realise they’re likely to be locked in extended-family homes for long periods. We may rename this the ‘in-law rush’, following our research this month which found 44% of our mums citing in-laws – swiftly followed by uncles then male friends– the people they felt least comfortable breastfeeding in front of.

Almost half of you only felt ‘ok’ or not comfortable about breastfeeding in front of people at Christmas, as opposed to half of you who say you’re ‘very comfortable’.

Over a third cited exposure of their tummy / body other than breasts a reason not to feed in front of them. So Christmas can be a minefield of body fears as well as dealing with this new, demanding little human.

A quarter of you will go into a private room to feed, or avoid feeding at all when with friends and family over the holiday period.

The good news for mums is that 93% say you grew in confidence breastfeeding in public the more you did it.
The good news for Peaks of London’s breastfeeding clothes – hopefully! – is that 96% of you said you would ‘definitely’ or ‘probably’ feel more confident feeding in public if you had clothes which allowed you to do so discreetly.

Whatever you do this Christmas, be proud, be bold and be confident. Oh, and get the right wardrobe! x

The Importance of Being Guilty

October 31st, 2012 · 3:01 pm  →  sPeaks

A study carried out at Stamford in the US has found that those prone to a guilty conscience are more likely to be successful leaders. According to the study, this shows empathy and the increased likelihood of being a team-builder. Any mother I’ve ever met is plagued with guilt; we’re either spending too much time away from them with work or even with their sibling; we’re guilty about not seeing our partner enough; we’re even guilty about feeling guilty, knowing that you’re actually doing the best you can. So as the study concludes, guilty-feeling mothers shall rule the world shortly. Just after they’ve put the dinner on, breastfed a child, done the homework, shouted at the delivery man, done some e mails and written a presentation.

Peaks of London designs dress in tribute to Adele

October 24th, 2012 · 2:39 pm  →  sPeaks

In celebration of the FABULOUS Adele having a baby boy, and because we think she sums up the Peaks of London sassy mother, Peaks of London is proud to present its specially-designed Marilyn/Adele dress. It’s for the part of you that thinks Marilyn at the subway, and the attitude and look of Adele. In the light of her hideous treatment at the hands of internet trolls, we are all about some positivity right now towards the wonderful singer. We’re super-excited, and due to popular demand from you guys we are going to put it on sale in January. For wait list, e mail us at info@peaksoflondon.com

Sleep is over-rated!

October 22nd, 2012 · 10:36 am  →  sPeaks

This month I launched my first column in Baby&Me magazine; it’s all about sleep – or lack of it. Please do let me know what you think of it, and what other subjects you think I should be covering! The irony of my column on sleep deprivation coming out on the same day as I’d had three nights of a child with gastric flu was not lost on me… Look out for the next in November; read the article here

Breastfeeding would save the NHS £40m

October 22nd, 2012 · 10:32 am  →  sPeaks

Great news for breastfeeding campaigners last week in the news;

It’s amazing to think a little thing (or two little-ish things!) can do so much good. So perhaps the government needs to re-look at the level of support it provides women who are trying to breastfeed? It’s rarely the easiest thing in the world; when I was struggling, tear-streamed and exhausted, I was told ‘just do what comes naturally’, as if I was un-natural to find it difficult. Understanding, patience and real practical help – ‘stick him here not there’ is what women really need.

Spinning classes

October 15th, 2012 · 11:59 am  →  sPeaks

It’s almost impossible to remember what kids did before the micro scooter was invented. Did they/ we actually walk that far? It is a lovely simple little thing which brings a great deal of joy and pain in equal measure in our house. I am vaguely asking Boy One to vary his lead leg, remembering my nascent fencing pastime being cruelly wrenched from me courtesy of being lopsided. Either way, here are ours in their parking spot- well loved like any family transportation. Without sweet wrappers.
